ROW
EIGHTY SEVEN [1]
Money
Office Row[2]
From
Howard Street to King Street:
When
Mr.Steward the pawnbroker was in business, his
pledge tickets bore the
address of money office row. Rumour had
it that a box of treasure had been
buried in the row, but Palmer
suggested that a money club, the
fore‑runner of the modern savings bank, held its meetings here. This row was paved in 1907.
At
the south‑east corner was a large public house and the liquor shop now
called St.George's tavern, but formerly
the "Sawyers Arms", and after that the "George the Fourth", at which time
the front was rebuilt and brought
out.
At
the north‑east corner was a house
which in the last century was the
property of John Playford. He
died in 1820, and bequeathed it to
his grandson, John Playford, who
in 1833 was drowned whilst bathing in the sea.
At the north‑west corner of
this row was
an old house with ornamental
ironwork on the front, next to Howard Street. Here were some arches with a groined roof in a cellar, occupied by
Mr.Jacob Preston, wine merchant.
The
1936 row survey says ‑ A branch row off its south side has a very
ancient wall, with a closed window under a pointed arch. There is a block of
five three storey houses which could be opened up, and their yards
cleared.
